It is fitting that we set aside one day of the year to remember those of our citizens who gave up their lives for an ideal greater than themselves. This one day of the year, formerly known as Decoration Day, has been a national observation since the end of the Civil War.
It has also evolved in to a three-day weekend, a time when working families can begin their summer by going to the lake, on picnics, or visiting some amusement park. This is all fine, of course, but we should not forget the underlying reason for Memorial Day – to remember those who gave their lives in military service.
Many of the fallen are our ancestors or relatives, next-door neighbors, former school chums; let us honor them. Let us not forget men and women who were horribly injured, who lost their limbs and whose lives were forever changed. Let us also remember our first responders, whose bravery and sacrifices are second to none. I want to honor the sacrifices of our stalwart citizens by showcasing those who continue to risk their lives and health, placing themelves in harms way; someone has to do it.

So please, let us remember our fallen . . . and let us at the same time celebrate those who remain among the living.
A safe Memorial Day to all!
