Contemptible

When House Representatives Jim McDermott, Mike Thompson, and (now retired) David Bonior (Democrats all) visited Iraq several years ago, they didn’t know the Iraqi Security Service financed their trip. They also did not realize that Iraq targeted them as useful pawns in an effort to reduce UN sanctions. Still, I wonder what this should tell us about some members of congress. That is, that a foreign government would ever consider an elected official as either sufficiently unpatriotic, or stupid enough to become a pawn for a foreign government.

The incident may be somewhat embarrassing to the three democrats, but I doubt it. I don’t know that much about McDermott or Thompson, but former Representative Bonior is a full-blown liberal (sans abortion) America-hater, and I can only imagine that it is difficult to embarrass anyone like that. I cannot help but wonder how a minority/majority whip of the House of Representatives (1995-2002) could allow this to happen. Well, that is unless . . . never mind. Is it any wonder that Americans hold members of Congress in such contempt?

Although in some ways, I can see how working for a foreign government is similar to accepting thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the Army of the People’s Republic of China. [Gag]
